The choice of type and concept of enclosure/dome has always been a very critical issue for telescope projects. Until the ’70-80s the main project driver was achieving the best protection and controlled environment for the telescope. This resulted in relatively very expensive domes and infrastructures and, for solar telescope in complex closed tube designs with extensive thermal control. Starting from the 80s, this view changed rather radically as it was found that facility seeing could actually be improved by letting the telescope exposed to wind flow. Several retractable enclosure concepts were developed, including prototypes, the most notably successful project being the VLTI four auxiliary telescopes at Paranal. Yet the effects of wind buffeting on the tracking performance and the M1 figure constituted a limit to the possibility of fully open air operation.  Hence all large telescope projects of the 90s compromised with large openings in nonetheless closed enclosures. More recently, some solar telescopes in the 1-m class have successfully implemented fully retractable enclosures and this solution is now envisaged as the baseline for the 4-m EST project. The talk will present various technical concepts of retractable enclosures, their advantages and drawbacks. Technology advances in active optics would now allow to offset most negative effects of wind buffeting. Parametric models will be outlined for modeling telescope and mirror figure performances under open air wind loads.
